Town offers cops cash for gamblers’ capture

IN DALAGUETE town, police personnel get rewards ranging from P500 to P10,000 for catching those involved in illegal numbers game.

The Municipal Government approved an ordinance on this last July 20, as a way of “mending the decaying morality of the people and inculcating in their minds that indulging in gambling is immoral.”

The legislation is also meant to promote the image of the southern town of Dalaguete as a gambling-free area, officials added.

The Cebu Provincial Board received a copy of the ordinance, for discussion in today’s regular session. It will likely be referred to the committee on laws and ordinances.

Mayor Ronald Allan Cesante signed in approval of the ordinance, which local officials believe would “encourage police officers to be more vigilant of their duty of enforcing the law.”

Aside from this, the elected leaders said the ordinance will “promote peace and order, considering that gambling has been considered one of the sources of criminality.”

The ordinance targets bettors, ushers, collectors, coordinators and financiers of the numbers game locally called masiao, which is famous in the towns.

The reward for the arrest of such persons will be released to the police once a case is filed in court.

Funds that will be used to implement the ordinance will be taken from the allocation for the local peace and order council.

The councilors were unanimous in approving the ordinance, which, they said, is to “take effect immediately.”

Sponsored by Councilor Jerry Dicdican, the ordinance also cited the National Government’s efforts to eradicate illegal numbers games. JPM
