Lancers end UC's streak

FOUR-TIME defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers showed they’re still the team to beat in the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) with a mighty win over the erstwhile undefeated University of Cebu Webmasters.

The Lancers, seeking a fifth straight title this season, stopped the three-game winning run of the Webmasters with an 87-70 victory Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Green Lancers, under coach Elmer Cabahug, used their superior heft and height to ground coach Rhoel Gomez’s running-and-gunning Webmasters.

Top scorers

Vergel Abelong, Ariel Mepaña and Kim Calo logged in 12 markers apiece to lead UV, which led UC, 42-30, at the half, to their second straight win in as many games, while dealing UC its first loss in four games.

The Webmasters, who had a thrilling 89-86 victory over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Tuesday night at the USJR Gym, were led by Allain Abellanosa, who banged in 17 points, while Miguelito Ducay and Kane Abatayo added 13 and 10.

UC Ladies

High-school defending champion UV Baby Green Lancers likewise halted the three-game streak of the Baby Webmasters with a 66-59 victory. The win improved UV’s slate to 2-1 after a stinging loss to the Warriors earlier.

Meanwhile, defending champion UC Lady Webmasters continued their spirited run in the season as they posted another victory in the form of an 84-73 manhandling of the Cebu Institute of Technology Lady Wildcats in the Women’s division yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

While the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors underwent some nervous moments before breaking away from the Don Bosco Greywolves in overtime, 53-48, in the Junior division.
