Sun.Star ties series with cliffhanger win

TRAILING GMA-7 by a point with only two seconds remaining, Sun.Star Cebu badly needed a hero to extend the 2005 Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup championship series.

Instead of getting one, it got two in Efren Lonzon and Patrick Costelo.

Like a quarterback finding a wide receiver for a last-second touchdown, Lonzon made a spectacular 94-foot inbound pass to Costelo, who completed the miraculous play with an undergoal stab with only 1.6 seconds left that propelled Sun.Star to a 65-64 victory over GMA-7 in the all-important Game 2 yesterday at the Guadalupe Sports Complex.

Bad free throw

Sun.Star’s semi-miraculous win not only avenged a 67-75 loss to GMA-7 in Game 1, it also kept Sun.Star alive in the best-of-three championship series.

Trailing GMA by one 62- 61 after a Jun Solon jumper with only 18 seconds left, Sun.Star got a big break when Lonzon was fouled with only 11 seconds left, but Lonzon could only come up with a split as Sun.Star sprinted back on defense with a precarious one-point lead, 63- 62.

Godfrey Rellin’s bank shot with only two seconds left to put GMA-7 up by one, 64- 63, as Sun.Star, which was inbounding from the backcourt, scrambled for one last play, which eventually led to Lonzon and Costelo’s endgame heroics.

Costelo topscored with 15 points, while Lonzon had 14 in a brilliant all-around performance. Jade Violeta was the only other Sun.Star cager in double figures with 10 points.

Jun Solon led GMA with 24 points, while Rellin added 20.

In the battle for third, ABS-CBN and Cebu Daily both failed to show up for their match.

Sun.Star (65) – Costelo 15, Lonzon 14, Violeta 10, Defensor 8, Michelena 8, Nilles 6, Lirazan 4. GMA 7 (64) – Solon 24, Rellin 20, Serna 8, Suarez 4, Veliganio 4, Mendoza 4. GCM
