TCC-UC table netters squeak past CDO team

TEAM Cebu City-University of Cebu (TCC-UC) Team A wasn’t able to stop the spectacular Jonathan Lagrosas, but had no problem shutting down the rest of Team Cagayan de Oro (CDO).

TCC-UC Team A edged out Cagayan de Oro, 3-1, in the best-of-five Team Finals in the E-Mall Table Tennis Challenge yesterday at the Elizabeth Mall Activity Center.

In the distaff end of competitions, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) tandem of Gloria Beladres and Desiree Enriquez took home the championship trophy after posting a 2-1 victory over CDO’s V. Lopeba and Ian Lariva, who is a silver medalist in the 11th Asian Junio Table Tennis Championship in Brunei.

TCC-UC Team A claimed the first game after Michael Motel pulled off a nail-biting 11-9, 11-8, 11-13, 3-11, 11-4 win over CDO’s Joseph Amba. Motel’s brother, Emmanuel Jr., followed suit with another long-drawn 10-12, 12-14, 12-10, 11-3, 11-7 win over Dario Hernane as TCC erected a 2-0 lead over CDO, which was only one game away from being eliminated at that point.

Enter Lagrosas.

Lagrosas, with his “mind-boggling” serves doing the most damage, butchered TCC’s Jude Ryan Gantuangco in straight sets, 11-8, 11-8, 10-7, and kept CDO alive in the match. Emmanuel Motel Jr., however, ended CDO’s short-lived rally by drubbing Amba, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3 in the fourth game to deliver the title to TCC.

“I was a little sluggish at first, but I was able to adjust right away” said Emmanuel Motel Jr. of his last match. “It turned out that he’s a ‘whacker’ (a defensive-oriented player), so I kept that in mind. Fortunately, I got some big smashes from his returns.”

Had Motel lost, TCC-UC Team A would have been forced to a sudden-death fifth game, a dangerous Doubles match that TCC-UC Team B tried to avoid at all costs.

In the battle for third, TCC-UC Team B’s Jay Impuesto, Glendo Naire, Samuel Belandres, defeated USJ-R, 3-2. On the distaff side, TCC-UC D of Marissa Flores and Syvil Joven posted a 2-1 win over University of San Carlos’ (USC) Erma Trasmil and Joanna Togonon for the third-place trophy.
