THE University of the Visayas (UV) kicked off the new season with a win over the University of Southern Philippines in the Men’s volleyball tournament of the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).

The game, which highlighted yesterday’s opening ceremony of the Cesafi other events, was a classic five-set match-up with the Green Lancers escaping with a victory.

Host University of San Carlos (USC) lady spikers, on the other hand, debuted with a bang after blasting University of Cebu in straight sets, 3-0.

USP took the opening set, 25-21, over UV, but the latter quickly tied the match after claiming the second, 25-23.

Women’s division

USP again grabbed the edge following a 25-20 third-set win before UV came back with a 25-22 win in the fourth set to send the game to the full distance.

UV came out steadier as it eked out a 15-12 deciding set victory to take the match.

In the Women’s division, the Lady Warriors had an easy time over the Lady Webmasters as they tallied a 25-13, 25-12, 27-25 victory to grab the early leadership.

Meanwhile, the other events of the Cesafi were formally ushered in yesterday with a colorful opening ceremony at the USC Gym.
