Employers want ban on some sites

TAGBILARAN CITY - Many companies want to ban employees’ access to social networking sites, like Friendster, from their corporate Internet connections, RAYnetworks Inc. managing director Juner Yaneza said Friday.

Yaneza also said the top complaints of companies are spam, viruses, worms and access to non work-related sites.
RAYnetworks provides bundled Internet access solutions to corporate clients.

Yaneza, in an interview, said 90 percent of companies that approach them ask that access to social networking and pornography websites and the use of instant messaging and peer-to-peer file sharing be banned from the corporate network.

Pornography

“It used to be porn. Now, they’re asking us to ban sites like Friendster. It’s just fair because they are using company resources,” Yaneza said.

He added that it is more cost-effective for companies to get the services of solutions providers, like them, than to get “raw Internet access” because of the bundled solutions.

“They no longer need to experiment with solutions if they get a RAYnetworks account. Our service also provides protection from malware, viruses and worms. They also do not need to hire security
experts for their network,” Yaneza said.

RAYnetworks also provides its own version of a Wi-Fi hotspot, the RSpot. Unlike regular hotspots, RSpot provides value-added wireless Internet access. An RSpot is protected by anti-virus and firewall solutions to make sure that devices that connect through them are protected.

RSpot also allows establishments, such as hotels and resorts, to connect users to the establishment’s system. A hotel, for example, that deploys an RSpot can provide its occupants not only with safe access to the Internet but also access to the hotel menu and other resources.

RAYnetworks is working with a Bohol resort to deploy an RSpot within its facilities. The initial work would be on basic Internet access but he said they would be bundling value- added services later. (MTL)
