Seares: ‘Beso-beso’ By Cheking Seares News(boy) Sense
On Page One of many papers yesterday was splashed President Arroyo’s “beso-beso” with ex-president Cory Aquino.
Face-to-face meetings of feuding public figures fascinate us: part of public lust for intrusion, extension of feeding frenzy on celebs.
After Cory’s demand for Glo to resign, the public wanted to see how they behave in the same room or stage.
Senate chief Franklin Drilon defected and joined the “Quit Gloria” outcry, whetting public appetite to watch them together; thus, the media focus on that State of the Nation scene.
Whenever ex-senator Sonny Osmeña and Gov. Gwen Garcia meet at a public affair, people’s interest unfailingly climbs. Triumph
Awkward discomfort. Embarrassing silence. Raging animosity. One’s urge to lunge at the other’s throat.
Not easy to shun or control. The tempting response is to head for the exit, but often there’s none.
So when there is no way out:
* The civil way is to keep the amenities, as the Cory -Glo buss or the Franklin-Glo handshake did;
* Boorish ways include silently staring at each other, as Sugbuak and anti-Sugbuak groups did when they met at the House hearing; or change seats, as Sonny O. did at the same split-Cebu forum; or avoiding the enemy’s eyes when the “peace-be-with-you” injunction comes at a shared mass.
OK, the civil gestures are “plastic.” Still, who doesn’t ap-plaud the few occasions when minimum civility triumphs?
