Peping’s denial: No P50M doleout
MANILA – Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) chief executive officer Jose “Peping” Cojuangco yesterday denied that satellite host Bacolod City will get P50 million for venue rehabilitation.
AgreementCojuangco, also the Philippine Olympic Committee president, said that Bacolod, one of the other four provincial hosts of the SEA Games, may receive P5 million as part of the agreement when Rep. Monico Puentevella pushed for the approval of the P300 million by President Gloria Macapangal-Arroyo.
“Bacolod is really part of the P300 million promised by the president because Rep. (Monico) Puentevella is among those who strongly lobbied for the approval of the budget. When the letter of instruction was released Bacolod is part of it,” Cojuangco said.
He said Bacolod still needs to rehabilitate both the Paglaum Sports Complex and Panaad Sports Center, venues for the Seag Men’s football competition.
“Football is very popular in other Southeast Asian nations. Only here that it’s not. Bacolod needs to renovate the two stadiums for the event,” Cojuangco pointed out.
Reaction
Cojuangco’s statement was in reaction to reports that Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan Guardo will raise the issue on Bacolod’s privilege in today’s Philsoc meeting in Manila.
Bacolod City will also host volleyball, boxing and weightlifting. Cebu will be staging the less popular judo and karatedo at the Mandaue City Sports Complex, dancesports at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, pencak silat at the Cebu Coliseum, sepak takraw at the University of San Carlos Gym and mountainbike in Danao City.
Aside from Metro Manila, which will host 70 percent of the Games, other provincial hosts are Subic for archery, canoe-kayak, sailing and triathlon; Angeles City for petanque and lawnbowls; and Tagaytay City for chess. (FCC)
