The past two weeks, WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista has increased his training regimen in preparation for his US mainland debut.

The Candijay-Bohol native has sparred a total of 54 rounds at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles under the close watch of Freddie Roach and Edito Villamor.

“Since Aug. 8, Rey has sparred 54 rounds. The boxers that we have been utilizing for sparring are junior flyweight Brian Viloria, bantamweight Jorge Alberto Diaz, who is also a regular sparring partner of Manny Paquiao, Brazilian flyweight Jose Albuquerque and super featherweight Heder Rivas,” said Bautista’s American business manager Michael Koncz in an E-mail.

Different styles

Bautista will fight Colombia’s Felix Flores-Murillo for eight rounds in the Top Rank card “Double Trouble” that will feature Mexican Eric Morales against US Olympian Zahir Raheem, and Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao against Hector Velasque on Sept. 10 (Sept. 11 RP time) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Koncz said sparring with the different fighters helped Bautista in different aspects. Villoria and Diaz have good speed, head and foot movement that could sharpened his techniques in cutting off the ring, using jabs in getting back into position along the ropes and corners.

“The Brazilian has good upper body movement, however, he also has a great tendency to use roughhouse tactics including frequent holding. Rey is adapting well in dealing with this style and the frustrations,” said Koncz. “As to Heder Rivas, he outweighed Rey and liked to slug it out. Therefore, Rey attempted to utilize his jab, foot and upper body movement and was more cautious and selective on the combinations and power shots.”

Koncz said Bautista undergoes vigorous conditioning and strength drills every day under Wild Card trainer Justin Fortune.

On non-sparring days Bautista runs about 3.5 miles on hilly terrain. On sparring days, he jogs 5.2 miles on flat terrain.
