Jewelers prevail v. Hornbills

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers defeated the Zamboanga del Norte Hornbills, 95-81, in their opening assignment in the Fiesta Invitational Basketball Championship at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Hornbills opened the first quarter hot, posting a 26-23 lead, but the Jewelers turned to shooters James Laygo and Aldrin Ocañada to loosen up Zanorte’s interior defense and take the momentum from thereon. Zanorte failed to regain composure after being outscored, 25-18, in the second quarter.

Sustained assault

Laygo finished with 22 points and Ocañada hit 20.

After a 48-44 halftime lead, the Jewelers continued their assault with Marlon Piodo and Danilo Aying sustaining the run. Lou Gatumbato led Zanorte with 22 points, while Mark Apepe added 14.

The tournament, organized by the League of Municipalities Misamis Oriental Chapter, features Montaña Pawnshop, Valencia Golden Harvest, Aqua World Marinos and Misamis Oriental.

It is part of Cagayan de Oro’s annual fiesta celebration and aims to generate funds for sanitation and hygiene of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail.

At press time, the Jewelers were still playing Davao City’s Montaña Pawnshop.
