A healthy alternative to carbonated drinks

Orange Drew, the newest juice drink in town, is not only the answer to thirst but also the response to the significant need for a low-priced yet healthy drink for the masses.

Alternative Foods Manufacturing Corp., headed by Conrado L. Espinosa, produced a high-class natural fruit juice extract drink from Australia.

Espinosa says the plight (financial matters) of most Pinoys was their motivation for making Orange Drew. “A carpenter, for instance,” he discusses, “has to pay at least P8 for snacks – P6 for a soft drink and P3/2 for tinapay. Now with Orange Drew (which is priced at P3 for a 7oz. cup and P5 for a 12 oz. cup at their outlets), they can save money.”

Apart from the monetary aspect, what concerns Espi-nosa also are the choices most citizens have to quench their thirst. They usually either buy soft drinks or juices from sidewalk vendors. Both aren’t advisable since soft drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, sugar and acid, while sidewalk vendors are reported to use “magic sugar” (a harmful synthetic sweetener sold at the black market) in their concoctions.

Alternative Foods said it sees to it that their consumers’ health is assured. The company explained the amount of preservatives in Orange Drew is so low that its shelf life is a mere 21 days.

Field sales quality inspectors check outlets to see if they are following Good Dispensing Practices (GDP), which include keeping the table top dispensers and ice buckets clean, and using only purified ice for every serving.

Alternative Foods said the company is now coping with the rising demand for the juice drink, which has grown from eight five-liter containers per day to 1, 000 since its launching in November last year.

Espinosa talks of it more as a crusade than an entrepreneurial venture. “We want to offer Orange Drew to heavily-populated third world countries, where affordability and health are main concerns.”
