Costanilla: Angela’s day

PRESENTATION. I bumped into Lapu-Lapu city councilor Damian Gomez who informed me that the Kadaugan sa Maktan, the re-enactment of the bloody fight between local hero Lapulapu and Portuguese invader Ferdinand Magellan, will be presented during the Garbo sa Central Visayas grand opening in Intramuros, Manila. The event opens on September 2. Gomez also said the Kadaugan sa Maktan presentation is under the direction of Rajee Palanca while Joe Galeon is the choreographer. The festivals of Negros Oriental, Bohol and Siquijor, aside from those of Cebu, will be showcased in the opening program which, incidentally, will be emceed by this writer per invitation of Department of Tourism regional director Dawnie Roa.

PARTY. It was an impromptu mini variety show that the friends of former television show host Angela Calina did during her birthday party at Abaseria in Mabolo. No script, no program sequence, no microphones, no nothing but just the presence of Angela’s relatives and friends. And it was during the party that I discovered Aira, Angela’s very talented 9-year-old daughter, who knows nothing about stage fright. She is presently studying at the Harvest Christian School.

ENTERTAINING. It was a truly entertaining evening for all of us. ABS-CBN 3’s Jude Bacalso and Aira did an impromptu mini-drama that truly delighted the audience. I told my seatmates that Aira, given theproper break, could become a great actress someday. And there was Cebu Popular Music Festival interpreter Cheryl Comendador who sang Love Moves in Mysterious Ways a capella, and yet came out with a soulful version. Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau’s Rudynah Entera was splendid and convincing in her Five Divas number by singing portions of the signature pieces of Jaya, Donna Cruz-Lardizabal, Jessa Zaragoza, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Vina Morales. Rudynah should further develop her ability of sounding like the singers earlier mentioned. Truly, when talented friends gather, a moment of real fun is guaranteed.

TALENTS. Exploitation is one sad reality that continues to hound our very own local talents. It comes into play when talents are given a very small fraction of what they are supposed to receive. Worse, not giving fees to these talents whose time, effort and knowhow are virtually forgotten by those who get them in their shows and other public presentations is reprehensible. That’s pure and simple exploitation. It has got to be stopped immediately.

ENCOURAGE. This writer would like to encourage you, dear readers, to text or send me e-mails regarding cases of exploitation of local talents and entertainers, including those television show hosts, performers and others directly involved in production work. Our purpose is not to humiliate oppressors and “exploiters” of local talents and entertainers. Our only objective is to point out their mistakes, hoping that they will no longer repeat what they are doing to our talents and entertainers. My heart bleeds for them who are victims of exploitation. May they realize that they do not live by glamour alone. They also need to survive - and provide for their basic needs. But the question is, are these talents and entertainers willing to come out in the open and share with us their experiences of being exploited by their managers? Are they brave enough to tell all?

ASSUMING. This local radio personality is being tagged as Mr. Assuming based on the way he talks on the air. Even his close friends and a few media peers find him to be so “airy.” His efforts to make his radio program land at the top of the rating game are not paying off.
