Editorials: Proposed way out

There’s already tacit general public acceptance of the fact that our republic is in some sort of political mess.

And the situation seems like a quicksand, meaning, the more the political leadership tries to free the nation from disaster, the more it sinks. Still, efforts to look for a workable solution to the mess are continuing.

The other day, it was reported that some of the protagonists of this political mess are proposing a setup workable for all concerned, giving the incumbent leadership a graceful way out.

The proposal came from El Shaddai leader Mike Velarde, and starts with a coalition government.

Once the coalition Cabinet is in place, the next move would be to amend the Constitution so general elections could be held in 2007.

The idea, according to its proponent, is not repugnant to President
Arroyo, and she has reportedly encouraged discussion on its feasibility.

Indeed, what may be considered key to the proposal's acceptability to the President is the fact that she would head the coalition government and remain so until her successor shall have been elected in 2007.

That she remains president of the country heading a coalition Cabinet majority of whose members belong to the opposition would preempt the moves of anyone aspiring to succeed her.

This proposal presupposes that Arroyo is agreeable to the idea that she would not remain in office until 2010.

And so, in a manner of speaking, it would be the graceful way out for her under the circumstance.

The problem, however, is its acceptability to the people at large.

Presidential offer

The report coming from a trusted aide of President Arroyo stated that she is willing to cut short her six-year term of office if it is the only way to keep the country’s leadership whole, for the sake of national stability and survival.

Coming from the so-called “presidential point man” for reconciliation with the political opposition and her other detractors, the offer is much too good for the opposition to refuse.

It would give her the graceful exit she may have long been looking for.

At the same time, it gives the other side of the political fence the playing space for them to work out their “version” of what they truly wish to achieve for this land.

The offer is there, but will the opposition take it?
