Speak out: Safety in swimming pools
By Jesus I. Cortes
A. Bonifacio St., Mandaue City

(This is an open letter to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and all mayors)

Recent swimming pool drowning incidents that happened in Cebu in less than a year all boil down to the lifeguard/s issue that is apparently taken for granted by many establishments.

Shouldn't these fear-provoking incidents be a wake-up call for the government or concerned local agencies to start imposing ordinances or putting some “teeth” in ordinances, if such exist, and teach reckless owners/operators of establishments to give the paying public an assurance on their safety?

For Cebu, known to be a place of beautiful beaches and resorts, the incidents somehow paint an image of weakness on the part of local governments.

Should we lose more lives before we get our acts together?

We have yet to see the day when public servants stop politicking and immerse themselves in pragmatic issues.
