Speak out: Bring Gloria’s case to Senate
By Percival de la Torre

With the exception of her rah-rah boys in Congress and/or local government units, admirers/supporters who believe in her leadership, loyalists in the bureaucracy, and bootlickers who stand to gain with her continuance in office, it now appears that most people are convinced the allegation of cheating against President Arroyo in the last election is true.

Luckily for the President, no people power in the magnitude of Edsa 1 and Edsa 2 has materialized because the opposition is split. Because of this, she has steadfastly held her ground and dismissed the call for her voluntary resignation.

Understandably, her stand is anchored on the basic constitutional right of a person to be given due process of law---“a law that hears before it condemns, which proceed upon inquiry and render judgment only after trial.”

Given that she would like to be afforded the opportunity to refute the allegation of manipulating the election result, Lakas congressmen and their allies in the House should not block/delay the transmittal of the impeachment case to the Senate in order for the trial to commence at the earliest possible time.

In other words, notwithstanding that an impeachment is essentially political in nature, administration lawmakers must decide on the matter with justice as their guide and conscience as their counsel so that the truth in this sad episode will see the light of day.

Indeed the Senate trial will be costly in terms of public time and money spent. However, it is the only venue where the opposition can present all the hard evidences they claimed will prove that Arroyo cheated her way to a new term in Malacanang.

Likewise, it will also enable the President to debunk the accusation that she conspired with a Comelec official to rig the election and demonstrate that in fact she won the presidency fair and square.
