Beats Panthers; UV-UC showdown shapes up

Right after their three-game win streak ended in their homecourt, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters gave the undefeated University of Southern Philippines (USP) Panthers a taste of their experience.

In a battle between the league’s best press-and-trap defenses, the UC Webmasters barged into the USP Gym and registered a 106- 95 victory Tuesday night over the Panthers, stopping the Panthers’ three-game win streak in the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. Men’s basketball tournament.

In the other matches, the USP Baby Panthers registered their third straight win after pulling off an 89-80 victory over the Baby Webmasters, while the University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors conquered the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Lady Wildcats, 84-76, in the Women’s division.

The Webmasters, who also had their own three-game winning streak snapped by the mighty University of the Visayas Green Lancers at their homecourt, the Cebu Coliseum last Saturday, are now at second place with a 4-1 card, while the Panthers dropped to 3-1.

With the elimination round nearing the second round – and with perennial Final Four qualifier University of San Jose Jaguars sputtering to a 1-3 start – a finals scenario pitting UC versus UV Finals is fast shaping up.

The win over the Panthers concluded the Webmasters’ final assignment in the first round. The Webmasters have beaten all teams except the Lancers, who have so far played two games – winning both – this season.

The Webmasters’ trapping defense produced spotty results to trailed, 44-48 at halftime.

But they managed to control the game in the third period with their army of runners and leapers making life tough for the USP ball-handlers to get across the halfcourt line.

USC Women (84) – Delos Reyes 32, Ceniza 18, Cañete 13, Querubin 6, Lim 4, Go 4, Comajig 4. CIT Women’s (76) – Tabernero 29, Pepito 20, Sanchez 8, Faune 6, Ruelo 4, Café 3, Suladas 2, Santos 2.

USP Jrs. (89) – Hermosa 24, Ybañez 19, Ligno 12, Dysam 10, Ferraren 10, Nuñez 6, Tero 6, Elorde 2. UC Jrs. (80) – Colina 23, Muhammad 11, Panerio 10, Cuico 10, Enriquez 7, Espinosa 6, Connors 5, Tabalin 4, Mira 2, Bacalso 2. (GCM)
