Chiongbian: The ladies of golf
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

Hey, if Women’s golf is your thing, you better mosey over to the Cebu Country Club (CCC) for the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines’ 13th edition of the Luzvimin Golf Invitational.

The ladies are all in colorful uniforms with some colors you wouldn’t even think existed. Tomorrow is your last chance to see the top lady golfers of the land playing their three-day tournament!

Twenty-two golf clubs are represented, the largest turnout in recent years with full complements of six players each for a total of 132 players. They’re here to battle it out in three divisions: Diamond, Ruby and Pearl, for the bragging rights as the best golf club in Women’s golf.

The main thrust of the tournament is team competition but the fight for individual honors is simmering hot because their individual performances will place them in the National Amateur ranking of WGAP.

And what do you know, CCC topped the Diamond or Championship division for the first time in WGAP’s 13-year history. CCC is at 186 points, three points ahead of Southwoods, which is led by top-ranked Philippine amateurs Lora Roberto and Carmelette Villaroman.

But never mind, the young guns of CCC composed of Kathleen Uy, Maite Unchuan, Hannah Wong and Jyra Wong have no fears. They just kept their head down and whacked scores of 51, 48, 48 and 39, respectively. The other two CCC players, Mercy Bejar and Eva Hino, shot a pair of 32s.

Mactan Coral is also in the Diamond division with Rachel Burlas, Erma Gabasa, Geraldine Ash, Emma Ishimoto, Anna Patia Lugari and Judalyn Taghoy.

The Alta Vista team is in the Pearl division with Lulette Canizares, Joy Siguan, Gina Yap, Rosita Uy, Divina Ricardo and Mayet Alba. Same as Club Filipino with Gloria Alazas, Jeanette Chiu, Jo Veloso, Flor Streegan, Remy Perez and Joan Castillo.

Although many veterans are playing in the Luzvimin tournament, there are quite a few first-timers. And always typical of ladies tournaments, they are very strict with the rules, with no exceptions. This makes the rules committee more than happy to oblige in their usual boring routine.

ROARING TIGER. Did you see the Tiger roar when he won the NEC Invitational?

There was no real pumping of the fist in the air when he holed out his final putt for par that was only inches away. Maybe more like a whimper and the pushing of the hands upwards at the end of the final round was like a slow-mo, as if the putter weighed a ton. I said this before and I still believe that Tiger Woods’ problem is not his swing but with his putter. This time he was lucky to get out of it relatively easy.

Missing five very short putts was painful to watch.

Woods makes bubbles with his saliva and spits it out whenever he gets a bad shot. It is not his fault that the TV always plays him up close and personal so that the British commentator said, “I wish he wouldn’t do that disgusting thing.”

That was a simple case of a Tiger foaming in the mouth when he doesn’t get the shot he wants. Once again, Chris Dimarco is the bridesmaid; he should be the one foaming in the mouth.

GOLF TIP: How to hit your irons on downhill lies. Start by tilting your upper body parallel to the slope at address and leaning your head and shoulders to the left (down the hill). Sixty percent of your weight should now be on your left side.

Play the ball just behind the center of your stance with hands slightly ahead. Remember not to sway or else you will lose your balance and mishit the shot. Sweep through the ball instead of hitting down by making a wide takeaway and shallow backswing.

Don’t worry about power; you’ll generate that by a strong shoulder and hip turn, and by clearing your hips briskly on the downswing. The key to downswing is to “chase” the ball through impact, keeping the clubhead low to the ground and straightening your right arm through the downswing.
