Host ladies lead Luzvimin Invitational

There is truly no place like home.

The Cebu Golf and Country Club (CCC) proved just that at the opening round of the 2005 Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP) Luzvimin Golf Invitational yesterday.

Playing at the home turf, host golfers consisting Kathleen Uy, Maite Unchuan, Hannah Wong, Jyra Wong, Mercy Bejar and Eva Hino emerged early leaders of the Diamond division after Day 1 with a combined 186 points, edging the 183 of Southwoods.

Meanwhile, Alabang Country Club registered a 145-point output, edging out Villamor Golf Club’s 143 for the opening-day leadership of the Ruby Division.

Wack-Wack’s 134 points took the first-day leadership of the Pearl division, beating the 133 of Pamplona and 130 of local entry Alta Vista Golf and Vista Country Club.

Boosting the youth-laden CCC’s Day 1 output was Uy, who carded the team’s best score of 51 points, which tied Del Monte’s Eva Miñoza for the second-best individual mark, behind the 53 of Del Monte’s Lovelyn Guioguio.

Also making big waves for CCC was Maite Unchuan, who scored the day’s lone eagle, and Hannah Wong, who had 48 each. Jyra Wong’s also scored for CCC in the six-to-play-for-to-count format with 39. Other members of the team are Mercy Bejar (32) and Eva Hino (32).

Ruby division

Southwoods’ scorers were Lora Roberto (50), Carmelette Villaroman (47), Claire Ong (46) and Bernadette Abiera (40).

Alabang had 145 points to pace the Ruby division, edging by a point Negros for the first-day lead.

The stellar performances of Guioguio and Miñoza, meanwhile, proved to be big thrust for Del Monte, which finished third in the round with 173 despite having only two players carding at least 40.

Camp Aguinaldo finished fourth with 160 while Sta. Elena rounded out day’s top five with a 154, finishing ahead of local entry Mactan Coral Golf Club, which had 153. (GCM)
