Jewelers outplay Montaña
M. Lhuiller Kwarta Padala Jewelers won the battle of pawnshops, prevailing over the Davao City-based Montaña Pawnshop Jewels, 79-68, to become the No.1 team in Bracket A of the League of Municipalities-Misamis Oriental Champion-organized Fiesta Invitational Basketball Championship at the Xavier University Gymnasium in Cagayan de Oro City.
With their sight trained at another championship, the boys of coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba started strong behind the all-around effort of Bong Marata and the hot hands of Aldrin Ocañada, erecting a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
James Laygo came off with blazing guns in the second quarter as the Cebuanos raised the lead to 50-36 at the bend.
But the Davaoeños got closer at three points early in the fourth until Jercules Tangkay, who had just rejoined the Jewelers, exploded with seven straight points to put the game away.
