Jeffrey and Raki in Once On This Island tomorrow!

Set in a fabled Caribbean island, Once On This Island is a story of a peasant girl who rescues a stranger from the clutches of death and then falls in love with him in the process. Lending their voices to the two lovers are two young singers who themselves come from different worlds.

Jeffrey Hidalgo, playing the rich “beaux homme” Daniel, at 25, is what most of us might consider a certified veteran. After having started his career young with Smokey Mountain back in the ‘90s, he is currently promoting his newly released self-titled album Jeffrey ‘05, the fifth in his prolific career. On the other hand, Raki Vega, playing the peasant girl Ti Moune, seemed to pop out of the blue, a lass from Cebu who joined the reality TV show Born Diva on ABS-CBN, and handily won with her crystalline voice and well-behaved demeanor.

Hers is a traditional, conservative background, a closely knit community of family and friends while his is fast-paced, bright, often loud and very cosmopolitan. Like Daniel, he is charming and confident, urban and hip. She is shy and self-deprecating, but also wide-eyed and enthusiastic, traits she shares with Ti Moune. They come from two different worlds on the same land, pursuing the same dream in the land of entertainment. Looking at them, one sees that the casting makes perfect sense.

Helping Jeff and Raki to tell the story of Once On This Island are some of the most arresting voices on the Philippine stage. Michael de Mesa, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Bituin Escalante, May Bayot, among others, all lend their glorious voices to this tale of love set in an island with two different worlds.

But looking at both Jeffrey Hidalgo and Raki Vega going at it full voice in rehearsals, one is inclined to think that the world is sometimes much smaller than our imaginary divisions make it out to be.
