Cebu to get P10M

Last week, Cebu Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (CebuSoc) officials were still scouring where to get the millions needed to host six events in the upcoming 23rd Seag. Now, they can focus their efforts on doing a good job as hosts.

This after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has granted P10 million in financial assistance to the Cebuanos, whose vote was largely responsible for her win in last year’s elections.

“I got the confirmation just now from congressman (Monico) Puentevella,” Cheryl Ouano, the Mandaue City Sports Commission executive director and CebuSoc member, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday of the cash support from Arroyo.

The doleout, which will be taken from the P300 million pledged by Arroyo for the biennial games, will go to Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) CEO Jose “Peping” Cojuanco’s office before being turned over to Cebusoc not later than Sept. 7.

Cebu launch

“Rep. Puentevella wants the release not later than Sept. 7 since he’ll be leaving for the US to watch Manny Pacquiao’s fight. The turnover might be during the Cebu launching of the SEA Games,” said Ouano.

The Cebu Seag launching will be attended by Cojuangco, who is also the Philippine Olympic Committee president, and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez.

PhilSoc is expected to hand over the cash assistance to Cebusoc in the presence of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Mandaue City Mayor Teddy Ouano and Danao City Mayor Ramonito Durano III.

Full swing

“Cebu needs P15 million for the Seag hosting. We are asking P10 million from the national government, while the remaining P5 million will be provided by the host city governments – Cebu will dole out P3 million, Mandaue and Danao P1 million each,” said Cebusoc chairman Jonathan Guardo in a press statement yesterday.

But before the launching, PhilSoc officials are expected to be in Cebu next week.

“Everyone’s looking forward to this visit. Preparations are in full swing and I can assure that Cebu will be 100 percent ready for the Seag by October,” said Guardo.

Guardo also said that 70 percent of the accommodation requirements for athletes and officials have been arranged. (RCM)
