RP cagers beat Koreans

The RP-San Miguel Beer squad grabbed a share of the second spot in the 5th Shell Rimula Cup after scoring a 97-95 thriller over the SK Knights of South Korea at the National Indoor Stadium in Brunei.

In the other game, the Brave Thunders of Japan toppled the Shangdong Lions of China, 83-71, to remain unbeaten in the tournament after four games.

The Nationals, under coach Chot Reyes, endured a game-long hot 3-point shooting from Cho Sang Hyun, who topscored for the Knights with 34 points after nailing 64 percent (9-of-14) of his shots.

The Filipinos only managed to control the game in the last five minutes after trailing since the start to register its third victory in four games, tying their victims at the No.2 spot behind the league-leading and unbeaten Toshiba Brave Thunders of Japan (4-0).

Import’s exit

The early exit of SK Knights import Wesley Wilson, who fouled out in the 7:45 mark of the third period after pushing Dondon Hontiveros in a rebound play, also contributed to RP-SMB’s victory as the Koreans failed to recover from the departure of one of their top scorers.

Jayjay Helterbrand banged in 15 points and eight assists and Tony de la Cruz chipped in another 15 points in leading RP-SMB, which was played countrymen Alaska Aces at presstime yesterday.

“I thought we were lucky because Wesley Wilson fouled out, although that was really our game plan. We really wanted to attack him and force him into foul trouble,” said Reyes.

“We were successful on that part. But the SK Knights is also a fast team that can shoot. It’s so hard for us to stop a team like Korea, where everybody can shoot a 3-pointer.”

RP-SMB (97) – Helterbrand 15, Dela Cruz 15, Taulava 14, Adducul 13, Ritualo 12, Alapag 10, Hontiveros 6, Belasco 6, Reavis 6, Raymundo 0. SK Knights (95) – Cho 34, Wilson 23, Kim 16, Hwang 10, Lim J.H. 9, Kang 3, Lim H.S. 0.

Quarters: 19-20, 41-53, 68-70, 97-95. (JSV)
