Olympus set to expand production, buys MEZ 2 lot for new building

A Japanese firm that manufactures digital cameras has acquired another lot at the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) 2 to accommodate its expansion plans.

Olympus Optical Technology Philippines Inc. (OPI), producer of biological and industrial microscopes and digital camera technology, purchased a 7,500-square-meter lot next to its existing plants at the MEZ 2.

The purchase would mean an increase in production and more jobs, OPI assistant general manager Masami Nakayama said in an interview during a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday.

A warehouse-type building, built by a previous occupant, sits on the lot but Nakayama said this would be demolished to pave the way for the construction of a two-story building. It would be inaugurated in April next year.

Nakayama said OPI’s target sale for this year is 3.8 billion yen or P1.9 billion.

OPI started its operation in Cebu in June of 2002. It has more than 300 employees, at present.

“But with the expansion, OPI eyes to increase our number (of employees) to 800,” said Genevie Suson, team leader of OPI general affairs team in a separate interview yesterday.

OPI produces whole sets and subparts of microscopes and exports them to Japan.

From Japan, the products are distributed to Europe and the US, Suson said. “OPI is Olympus’ global main production plant for microscopes,” she added.

Suppliers from Cebu, Taiwan, and Japan are OPI’s suppliers of lens, mechanical microscope parts, and plating materials, among others.

Dahlia Luna, MEZ 2 manager, said during the groundbreaking ceremony that OPI’s expansion is a positive manifestation of the Japanese investors’ trust in the country that would result in creating more exports and jobs. (ALC)
