A headstart

Victoria Lynn Z. Mah is 22, and it shows. Transplanted to a working environment that regularly serves frayed nerves for dinner, Vicky combines girlish enthusiasm and level-headed professionalism. She assumes the role of a quick understudy with a seriousness that’s partially hidden by her sweet demeanor.

A product of St.Benedict Childhood Education Center from kinder until 6th grade, she spent her high school years at St.Theresa’s College. In college, she went to the University of San Carlos-Technological Center and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree major in Interior Design in 2004.

Like most young people, Vicky approaches fashion in a more circumspect way. The cheeky adventurism favored by free spirits of an older generation is interesting only to her as a point of reference.

How much influence does your mom have on your personal style?

A lot! I don’t always follow her fashion advice but I have to know her opinion, especially when I’m in doubt. I’d have to admit that my mom’s more fashionable than I am. I tend to be more picky, unlike my mom who can wear just about anything. She can carry it off and look fabulous. My love for things that are unique, like a vintage bracelet, I get that from my mom.

Do you give and accept unsolicited advice on fashion?

I tend not to give unsolicited advice. Aside from feeling that people should have the freedom to wear what they want, I also feel that it would be presumptuous for me to do so. But if someone gives me fashion pointers, I guess I won’t mind. I’d be open to it.

How different are your pants for daytime from the ones for nights out?

During work, you’d often find me wearing black or grey slacks. But after work, I prefer wearing jeans or other casual wear. For nights out, usually a darker-hued denim.

Any prized pants that you won’t part with?

I have this pair of super-low Levi’s that I absolutely love. It just feels so comfortable and the fit is perfect!

How about footwear?

I love sneakers and flipflops because they’re super comfortable and good for your feet. Plus, there are so many styles that are out in the market now. You could wear a different pair for your every mood (laughs). I also have this nice pair of high-heeled strappy sandals.

Is owning a Manolo Blahnik a big deal?

Nope!

What’s your idea of fashion heaven?

If it were a real place, then Manhattan would be my idea of a fashion heaven. If not, there may be a paradise where people look great without even trying.

How fastidious are you with cleanliness?

Very. I’m quite meticulous when it comes to cleanliness, especially with personal hygiene. Being clean just makes me feel comfortable.

Why did you land a hotel job instead of something in line with your interior design course?

I’ve always been interested in the hospitality industry, especially the hotel side of it. I was torn between taking up Interior Design or Hotel and Restaurant Management. I figured that if I chose HRM I’d have to study outside of Cebu, while if I took up Interior Design I could enroll at USC where their Interior Design program is really good! Plus, I wouldn’t have to leave my family behind.

Of course Interior Design won over. When I graduated I thought I’d give the hotel industry a shot. You know what they say, the best time to do everything you’d want to do is when you’re young so I thought, why not?

Do you intend to stay long in the hotel industry?

Well, I always try to keep my options open. But one thing’s for sure, I don’t regret getting this job. And I’m truly happy where I am right now.

Is it an advantage that you started young?

Yes, definitely, because it gives you a head start. You experience so much, and learning never stops. Especially when you get the chance to work in a dynamic and involved workplace.
