Talkback: Cheating accusation By Marjorie S. Ceniza Centre for International Education
It has been five years since Al Gore gracefully backed off allowing George W. Bush to take the presidency of the United States after a tumultuous counting of votes.
And it has been a year when John Kerry conceded defeat to re-electionist Bush.
Here in the Philippines, nothing of that sort happens. How many elections have been held here without any uproar? How many defeated candidates cry fraud after the official declaration of winners?
A few elections back, Miriam Defensor Santiago filed an electoral protest claiming she won over Fidel V. Ramos. Last year, Fernando Poe Jr. protested Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s win.
Does this show that people do not rely on the result of elections administered by the Comelec? Or is this because of the candidates’ inability to accept defeat?
I won’t answer that.
But here’s one point to ponder on: Why did Namfrel, C-cimpel and the inspectors and lawyers of defeated candidates not cry “fraud” during the counting?
