Blue rules MCWD chess tournament
The Blue squad made quite a dominating run in the 2005 Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) Chess Team Tournament after bagging the team championship trophy with plenty to spare.
The Blue crew, made up of Jose Earl Quisel, Gerand Toreteo, Jamilito Borces and Richard Misal, claimed the top plum by racking up a field-best 14.5 points in the five-round event, besting runner-up Black by three points.
The Black squad, consisting of Chiquito Lataza, Astrophil Logarta, Temoteo Bionson and Jorge Gabriente, finished second with 11.5 points after notching 2.5 points in its round-five encounter with Orange.
After amassing 11.5 points in the first four rounds, Blue hauled three more points in its encounter with the Green squad in the final round as Quisel, Borces and Mical registered victories over Green’s Leonardo Oliva, Raul Olivar and Al Robert Matbagon.
Green placed third with 10 points, while Orange settled at fourth with nine points.
Green’s Victor Libor, who notched the only final-round win for his team with a conquest of Blue’s Gerald Toreteo, racked up the event’s Best Board Medalist honors. (GCM)
