PBA to address issues on height, draft-pick sale
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will implement a stricter process in determining the height of imports for the Reinforced Conference.
Purefoods official Rene Pardo said the move would ensure that the imports would not go over the prescribed 6-foot-6 limit.
Aside from the proposed measure, Pardo said plans are also in place of doling out appropriate sanctions to the teams who will try to fly in reinforcements beyond the height limit.
“We want everybody to follow the rules. When somebody tries to sneak somebody in, we are proposing fines,” he said.
Cheating
Pardo said the different teams and other governors have already been apprised of the new measures and rules, expected to be formalized in a PBA board meeting on Sept. 5.
“With the numerous cheating in the past, we (governors) agreed to stop this mess and decided to have no height limit,” Pardo said of the previous conference which did not impose a height limit on imports. “Then we determined that it’s difficult to get imports beyond 6-6. If you’re 6-9 or 6-10, you should be in the NBA or Europe.”
Meanwhile, days after being spurned by their pick in the recent rookie draft, Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia Realty advised the league to put up guidelines that will address the alleged “sale of draft picks and players from disbanding ballclubs.”
Not beneficial
“While teams do have the right to transact their players through trades and sale as part of their property rights, what’s legal is not always beneficial for the league,” Encarnado said.
Encarnado earlier admitted he was approached by San Miguel and Talk ‘N Text for its second round pick, who later turned out to be Alex Cabagnot, a University of Hawaii-Hilo star who refused to sign up with the Realtors.
He said if moneyed teams can buy draft choices and players outright, then there will come a time when “super teams” would dominate league and fans’ interest would further wane. (JSV)
