Sepak takraw upbeat as games near
Despite being advised by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to avoid making any predictions, Philippine Amateur Sepak Takraw Association (Pasta) president Mario Tanchangco expressed his optimism of a very good performance from his team in the Southeast Asian Games (Seag).
Tanchangco said they are not allowed to make any predictions, referring to the directive from the POC that all predictions regarding the SEA Games should only come from POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco.
Pasta believes the RP sepak takraw team will surpass its dismal one-bronze performance during the Vietnam Seag two years ago.
There are six sepak takraw gold medals to be disputed in the Nov. 27 to Dec. 5 Seag, where the country battles against regional heavyweights Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar.
Sepak takraw, which will be staged at the University of San Carlos Gym, is among the six events Cebu will host in the 11-nation meet. The rest of the events are dancesport at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, pencak silat at the Cebu Coliseum, judo and karatedo at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex, and mountainbike in Danao City.
Cebu SEA Games Organizing Committee (CebuSoc) chairman Jonathan Guardo said sepak takraw is considered to be a gold earner for the Philippines aside from being the most watched event in the SEA Games after football.
“I expect sepak takraw to gather at least four golds. They have a very formidable team, which I know has been on a rigorous training for months now,” said Guardo.
Presently, CebuSoc is negotiating with Pasta officials for the staging of the pre-Seag tournament for sepak takraw this September.
Guardo said that they’ve already been making final arrangements with sepak takraw officials for the tournament.
Pre-Seag tournaments for karatedo and mountainbike are also in CebuSoc’s line-up of activities.
