Wenceslao: Political circus By Bong O. Wenceslao
Everybody expected it, thus the situation did not degenerate as some sectors may have expected it to. I am referring to Tuesday’s walkout of opposition congressmen during the House justice’s committee’s deliberation on the impeachment complaints against President Arroyo. That surely is a bad sign for those wanting to topple Arroyo.
Actually, the ingredients of previous political mayhems were there that day: emotionalism (shouting, paper-throwing, rushing to the exits), sympathetic crowd in the gallery (Susan Roces was there), rally outside the Batasan complex, and, yes, full media coverage. But after that, nothing. It was proof people are tired of the political circus.
I watched snatches of the TV coverage of the incident, but eventually went back to work (there were daily deadlines to meet). The rest of the day was routine. At home at night, I surfed the channels, but limited myself to HBO, National Geographic, Sports Plus (it had the US Open), etc. I had to rest my mind and body, so no ABS-CBN or GMA 7. *** I really wasn’t interested in then social welfare secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman until my wife pointed to me the varying color of a strip in her hairdo. Soliman later joined the so-called “Hyatt 10” of Cabinet members who resigned with a flourish then urged President Arroyo to do the same.
In Tuesday’s House justice committee deliberations, Soliman was in the gallery sitting beside “opposition rallying figure” Susan Roces. Early that day, Dinky accused the President of railroading the impeachment proceedings. How times fly. Didn’t Dinky sit beside the President in government functions? But at least her hairdo hasn’t changed.

My column on a barangay councilor’s accusation against the Yaphas in Pinamungajan invited this text message from Bebot Peña of Barangay Poblacion: “I hope Pinamungajan people will understand that being submissive will never effect change.”
And here’s from an unidentified texter: “The problem in Pinamungajan is not only the Yaphas. It’s about our people. This was shown in an essay written by Lorenzo Niñal months ago. After that piece came out, Niñal’s relatives were subjected to biay-biay and buyboy. Ensoy’s cousin, who emcees programs in the town, was gagged because he distributed copies of Sun.Star and explained the essay.”
TEXTREAX. I’m getting old. Two texters pointed to me that the province the Yaphas want to create out of the third district is Occidental Cebu, not Oriental Cebu. All the while, Occidental Cebu was in my mind but Oriental Cebu just slipped out. I stand corrected.
