Wenceslao: Of course, it was a zarzuela By Bong O. Wenceslao
I am amused at the reaction of some people to the dismissal of the impeachment complaints against President Arroyo. Only sadists make a hammer and hit his/her head with it. And I’m certain Arroyo is not one. Or to use another metaphor, did they really think the President would throw her body in front of that speeding impeachment truck?
Anyway, those who thought that the President wanted to go through a trial in an impeachment court were either naïve or suspending disbelief. The process set in motion by the House of Representatives was a zarzuela from the very beginning. Indeed, we all know it was a farce. The amazing thing is that we were all pretending it was real.
And you say that without the impeachment trial we will never know the truth? We all know the truth: President Arroyo cheated in the elections using her position and Virgilio Garcillano. But there’s another truth: the opposition also cheated. I mean, all these politicians betrayed the public’s trust. And people are tired of this political circus. *** Rep. Clavel Asas-Martinez is having the time of her life. To use an old cliché to describe her situation, she’s having her cake and eating it too (at least during the House justice committee deliberation of the impeachment complaint against President Arroyo). This is the reason why she’s in an upbeat mood. Or just look at her smile on television.
Consider this: As critic of the President, her star has shone again. Her ideas are being sought by the anti-Arroyo camp, as shown by her presence even in that group’s strategizing sessions. She has edged out the old stalwarts of the political opposition as darling of the national media. And if we believe her, the President is groveling at her feet.
What a life, indeed. She lambasts the head of Lakas, does the tango with the enemies of that party, claims she is still a member of the group---and gets away with it. Of course, some good things never last. There are signs Lakas’ countermoves are starting. In the meantime, Clavel should savor life’s joys.
TEXTREAX. The issue on the Yaphas in Pinamungajan, which flared after Barangay Councilor Guy Enriquez complained that the clan is hitting back at his in-laws, just doesn’t fade. Two texters defended Rep. Antonio Yapha, whom they described as, “motabang sa mga kabus, motambal nga way bayad.”
Texter Roy Gines goes deeper: “Congressman Junior Yapha is a good man and doctor. The problem with his political life is that he is being surrounded by sipsips that are ruining his reputation. His son Mayor Jeffrey only favors those close to him and neglects the majority who helped him win. If I were a Yapha, I would discard these sipsips.”
