Blue, Red squads cop top plums in CNU chessfest

The Blue team snared the championship title in the Cebu Normal University Intramurals chess competition Wednesday as it inked an aggregate total of 9.5 points after the final round.

Blue’s 2.5 points came from Jael Pino, who blasted Green team’s Warren Gilbolingo on Board 2, Jeno Parungao, who defeated Jan Mari Gilbolingo on Board 4, and Lemuel Libitania, who drew his Board 1 match versus Green’s James Castillo.

The only Blue casualty was Renz Ryan Paquibot, who lost to Karl Michael dela Cruz on Board 3.

The Red team, for its part, swept its final-round matches against the Yellow team to secure second place with eight points courtesy of Jerwin dela Cerna, Lemuel Bustamante, Kia Abaquita and Chuvy Quan.

Dela Cerna added another honor for Red after he snared the Board 1 gold medal, while Blue’s Pino, Paquibot and Parungao garnered the gilts on Boards 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

In the Women’s division, Red copped the overall championship after Marinell Martillana, Sofia Balite, Sheila Mabras and Rosariemae Torres conquered their respective rivals from the Yellow team in the final round for a 4-0 sweep.

Red scored nine points, while Green (8 points) of Jan Rina Betancor, Joan Gabriella Pecato, Jennieve Vistal and Wennonah Marie Rabusa landed second despite losing its final-round assignment to the Blue team, 1.5-2.5.

Betancor was awarded the gold medal on Board 1, while Blue’s Maricon Librado, Mabras and Rabusa copped the gilts on Boards 2, 3 and 4, respectively. (JSV)
