Disband RP cage team

RP national team coach Chot Reyes may lose the national developmental pool he has formed from the ranks of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

This after Reyes criticized the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) early this week during the PSA Forum.

Reyes said the continued recognition of the BAP by the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) despite the BAP’s expulsion from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the subsequent creation of the Philippine Basketball Federation Inc. has held the country “hostage.”

Reyes, head coach of the Coca-Cola Tigers in the PBA, also said that the prime movers in Philippine basketball don’t support BAP and that the latter “has no program and has no funding.”

Air21 Express representative to the PBA board of governors, Lito Alvarez, said Reyes’ “opinions are misplaced, considering the BAP has an existing agreement with PBA.”

“I must remind Chot Reyes that his selection as coach of the national team was an offshoot of the memorandum of agreement that was forged by the PBA and the BAP,” said Alvarez, who is also the deputy secretary-general of the BAP.

“It appears there’s no more use for the PBA’s multi-million budget for this program. In next week’s PBA Board meeting, I intend to seek clarification on the directions of the team being supported by PBA. I am even thinking of asking for the disbandment of the RP training pool, until such time that the Fiba suspension in the Philippines has been lifted,” Alvarez said. (JSV)
