Weather cooperates as Milo games open
By Mike T. Limpag

While the nation is saddled by political bickering up north, some 6,000 athletes from 280 schools in the Visayas showed up at the Cebu City Sports Center for the opening of the 10th Milo Little Olympics yesterday.

“I am thankful for Milo for hosting events such as these, which promote goodwill among sports enthusiasts,” Department of Education (DepEd) 7 director Carlos Mordeno said as he welcomed the delegates.

“I hope that through the Milo Olympics we will produce champions not only in the Southeast Asian Games but also in the Olympics.”

Weather factor

Mother nature also seemed to have sided with organizers yesterday as the rains stopped just before the opening ceremonies started, only to fall again after the closing numbers of the awaited cheer-dance contest.

“It is always heartwarming to see students compete in the spirit of sports,” Nestle Philippines’ Christy Garcia said.

In the first competition of the annual Olympics, the University of San Jose-Recoletos came up on top as it swept the Miss Milo Olympics Elementary and Secondary titles.

Marie Sharon Angel got the nod in the Secondary level with University of San Carlos’ Shannen Abarquez, second and Gennelyn Marie Ledesma of the University of the Visayas, third.

In the Elementary division, Lea Carla Macasero got the title with Milred Alonzo of City Central School second and UV’s Sheneen Eriel Codilla, third.

In the cheer-dance contest, San Isidro Parish won the P15,000 top prize in the Secondary division with Abellana National School and Zapatera taking the next two spots.

Elementray division

City Central took the Elementary title with Mt. Sinai Learning Center second and Barrio Luz Elementary School third.

The other games of the Olympics will start today at different venues.

Athletics, badminton, chess, gymnastics, scrabble, swimming and table tennis will be held at CCSC, football and taekwondo at Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, and lawn tennis at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club. Volleyball will be at Barrio Luz and Lahug Elementary Schools.
