Liso, SCBHABA repel Cecaba squads

The San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (SCBHABA) Selection fought hard all the way to clinch a 74-70 victory over the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association All-Stars in the Executives Cup basketball tournament Thursday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

In the other game, Abner Desiderio had 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists for the Liloanon Sports Organization (Liso) team, which is a game shy of completing a seven-game elimination-round sweep after a 117-98 thrashing of the Cecaba Selection.

Edwin Banaag sparked SCBHABA’s offense with 24 points, on top of seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in an all-around game, while Virgil Pua and Clyve Jude Monsanto chipped in 18 and 11 markers, respectively.

Second spot

SCBHABA now shares second spot with Club Monday on identical 4-2 win-loss slates.

The Cecaba All-Stars led briefly in the first quarter when Chester Cokaliong, who was manned throughout the game, drilled in three triples to take a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But Banaag, Monsanto and Jonathan Diaz took over a sizzling 25-13 run in the second canto to erase the deficit and enjoy a 38-30 advantage at halftime.

SCBHABA led, 47-37, in the third before Cecaba unleashed a 10-0 blast to knot the count at 47-all.

However, that was the best the Cecaba All Stars could muster as Pua nailed two consecutive 3-pointers to give the SCBHABA a 53-47 breather.

Vengeance

SCBHABA then played steadier in the final stretch to exact vengeance on the Cecaba stars, who beat them in their battle for third place last season.

Zotico Tan topscored with 17 points, while Edvin Kaw and Joel Chan netted 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Checked by SCBHABA’s defensive blanket, Cokaliong only finished with 11 points for the Cecaba All Stars, who ended the eliminations with a 4-3 card.

Meanwhile, Liso trailed, 25-28, but turned the tables with a 30-18 rally in the second canto. Liso dominated the game the rest of the way with huge help from its manpower advantage over the Cecaba Selection.

Christopher Cokaliong had another monster game, finishing with a career-high 33 points and eight rebounds, while Stephen Tan banged in 32 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, but their sterling performances were wasted as the Cecaba Selection dropped to 2-5.

SCBHABA (74) – Banaag 24, Pua 18, Monsanto 11, Amores 7, J. Diaz 6, Ramos 4, Moriles 2, Aznar 2. Cecaba All Stars (70) – Z. Tan 17, Kaw 15, Chan 13, Cokaliong 11, Sia 6, W. Yu 6. Chua 2.

Liso (117) – Desiderio 20, P. Oncines 15, D. Oncines 14, Soliman 10, Jugalbot 10, Ybañez 9, Torlao 8, Bio 8, Fernandez 6, Maglasang 6, Pepito 5, Bantilan 4, Del Mar 2. Cecaba Selection (98) – Cokaliong 33, Tan 32, Co 15, Yu 14, Co 4.
