MANILA—Central Visayas performers awed Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano with a “grand” opening of the region’s two-week turn in the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) Wow Philippines campaign.

“That was the grandest opening I have witnessed so far,” he said on the sidelines of the “Garbo sa Central Visayas” presentation at the Intramuros, Manila on Saturday.

Wow Philippines is a tourism marketing campaign initiated by Sen. Richard Gordon when he was DOT secretary in 2003. Wow is the acronym for “Wealth of Wonders”, which reflects the country’s numerous and diverse tourist attractions.

Partnership

The year-round event gives all regions in the country the opportunity to showcase their tourist attractions in Intramuros, which in itself is one of the tourist attractions in the country. It is the oldest among the districts in Manila.

Durano said region 7’s grand opening reflected the partnership among the different local government units (LGUs) and the private sector in the region.

He said the DOT gave all the regions P2 million each to be used for their respective events. Four regions have already showcased their tourism potentials.

Support

DOT 7 Director Aurora Patria Roa said the total expenses for the “Garbo sa Central Visayas” would amount to P8 million. Some LGUs allocated funds for their booths and gave financial support to their contingents. The province of Cebu, through Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, donated some P1 million for the event.

Durano said the “grand” celebration only enhanced the position of Central Visayas as the premier regional tourist destination for foreign tourists in the country.”

“Most foreign tourists go to Central Visayas. Why? Because it has the complete attractions—beach, mountains, fauna and flora. And most of all, the hospitality of the people in the region,” he said.

A showdown of festivals in the region was held during the event.

Among them were the Sinanggi-yaw Festival of Dumanjug, Cebu; Solili Festival of Siquijor; Saulog Festival of Tanjay City, Oriental Negros; Soli-soli Festival of San Francisco, Camotes, Cebu; Mantawi Festival of Mandaue City; Kadaugan sa Mactan of Lapu-Lapu City; Palawod Festival of Bantayan Island, Cebu and the Sinulog Festival.
