Rice!

RICE is a staple that accompanies every meal in the Asian home.

It also serves as a side dish to many occidental meals: lemon chicken with a side dish of aromatic rice.

No wonder rice is an integral part of the folklore of many cultures.

Harvestfields says that in Myanmar, the Kachins were sent forth from the center of the Earth with rice seeds and were directed to a country where life would be perfect and rice would grow well.

In Bali, Lord Vishnu caused the Earth to give birth to rice and the God Indra taught people how to raise it.

In China, rice is the gift of animals. Legend says that after a disastrous flooding, all plants were destroyed and no food was available. One day, a dog ran through the fields to the people with rice seeds hanging from his tail.

The people planted the seeds, rice grew, and hunger disappeared. All of these stories and many others have rice as their foundation, and for generations people have believed these lores.

Legends and myths were created to give emphasis to the importance of this pearl-like grain. Its versatility is equal to man’s every need on the table.

Toasted, it becomes an excellent ersatz coffee; and it can be taken as filling soup (gruel, sometimes fortified with shredded chicken, minced scallions and ginger) to feed a whole family. (Compiled from the wires by Carmen Urbina)
