Woman dies as 2 buses race

TWO racing buses cost one female passenger her life and injured 12 others after one of the vehicles rammed into a parked bus in Lawaan 1, Talisay City Saturday night.

The still unidentified woman was at the front seat of the Calvo Trans bus when it crashed into a parked SM Trans bus at 8:30 p.m.

Traffic investigator PO3 Edwin Alvarado said there were reports that Calvo Trans bus driver Gregorio Aliganga, 43, of Naga town, was racing with a Canoneo bus.

Both came from Cebu City and were heading south.

Alvarado said it seemed Aliganga did not notice the parked bus because there were no skid marks on the road to indicate he stepped on the brakes before crashing into the SM Trans Fuso truck bus parked along the road.

While the woman died, Aliganga had only scratches.

The woman is about five feet tall, in her twenties, and is wearing denim pants and a white shirt.

Aliganga was detained at the Talisay City Police Station and will face a case for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple serious physical injuries.

Gas station

SM Trans driver Jeffrey Perater, 31, said he parked in front of the Lawaan Central Elementary School because his conductor went to a nearby gas station to get change.

Of the 12 injured passengers, only two were in the SM Trans bus. They were identified as Isabelo Samante, 45, of Dumanjug and Apolinar Cañete, 42, of Barili.

Alvarado identified Calvo’s injured passengers as Robert Bastida, 21, Jerry Taberos, 21, Matias Simbahon, 31, Rey Millame, 24, Marcelo Torreon, 27, Canoy Arcadiong, 33, Ardiano Lebrinca, 33, Erwin Fernandez, 33, and Jutan Susada, 25, all of Toledo City, and Cesar Caburnay, 40, of Naga town.

They were taken to the Talisay District Hospital and the Minglanilla District Hospital.

Also at dawn yesterday, the Cebu City Traffic Division detained an American found positive of alcohol intake, after his Mitsubishi Pajero collided with a motorcycle, killing its female driver and injuring her passenger.

No license

Tony Roberts, 44, will also face another case for driving without a license.

A report prepared by SPO3 Mandaue Gomersado stated that Roberts was driving along Miñoza St., Kauswagan, Talamban, Cebu City when he collided with the motorcycle driven by Anna Lea Peña, 21, of Villa Leyson.

Peña was declared dead on arrival at the North General Hospital. Her passenger Rosalina Canicon, 23, is confined due to serious injuries.

Both Roberts and Peña had no license to drive motor vehicles in a public highway.

A medical certificate from the Cebu City Medical Center showed that Roberts had taken alcoholic drinks.

He surrendered and was detained.

He will face cases of reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property with homicide and physical injuries, driving under the influence of liquor, and driving without a license. MEA
