RP pugs lose abroad due to ‘hometown bias’
TWO Filipino fighters again went home with bruised egos as former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super-bantamweight champion Pedrito Laurente and RP 122-pound king Alex Escaner suffered contrasting fates in Tokyo, Japan last Saturday.
Laurente decked Japanese world-ranked fighter Toshiaki Nishioka in the second round and dominated the next three rounds but was handed a 93-99, 95-98, 94-97 unanimous-decision defeat.
Escaner, on the other hand, dominated the entire match against Yuta Nagai but only got a majority draw with scorecards at two 77-all draws and a 77-76 win for Escaner.
Staggered
Laurente dropped Nishioka with an uppercut just as the second-round ended and continued his assault against the staggering WBC No.1 and WBA No.4 Japanese in the third round.
The southpaw Nishioka got back in the fight in the fourth, while the lanky Laurente tried to score another knockdown with his aggressive game all throughout the fight. However, his attack was contained as the Japanese kept his distance using jabs and straights.
Laurente dropped to 16 wins, nine losses and a draw while Nishioka improved to 26-4-3.
Escaner meanwhile controlled the fight and kept the youthful Nagai on the defensive end most of the time.
However, the final bell only brought frustration for Escaner as the judges scored it a draw. Escaner now holds a 21-13-3 win-loss-draw slate, while Nagai now owns a 14-3-2 record. RCM
