THE University of Cebu padded its lead after the second day of action in the 10th Milo Little Olympics Secondary division after grabbing seven of the nine gold medals at stake in the track-and-field events yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Aside from athletics, UC likewise demonstrated its strength in swimming when it plucked four golds as the event came to an end yesterday, increasing its overall medal total to 20 golds, 12 silvers and eight bronzes.

The multi-event competition takes a break starting today and will resume on Saturday and Sunday.

Manned mostly by track-and-field athletes who saw action in the 2005 Iloilo City Palarong Pambansa, the UC track team was led by Stephanie Mae Sanico, who earned her second gold medal in the competition after dominating the Girls discus throw with a lob of 25.65 meters. Her first gold came Saturday from shot put.

Other winners

Mandaue City’s pride and 2005 Iloilo Palaro record-breaker Irin Balauran also racked up a gold for UC after dominating the Girls long jump event with a 4.71m clearance.

Also winning the gold for UC at the tracks were Benedict Ygot in the Boys 200m with a clocking of 28.06 seconds; Kenn Werner Villaruel in the 1,500m in four minutes and 46.45 seconds; Sheena Gacayan in the Girls 1,500m in 5:16.69; Carl Malazarte in the Boys 3,000m steeple chase in 11:56.79; and Dharl Pitogo in Boys long jump with a leap of 5.57m.

Swimming

At the pool, Diane Cañeda and Jeffrey Yana each secured their second gold medal with Cañeda topping the Girls 400m individual medley with a time of 6:07.91 and Yana ruling the 100m butterfly in 1:11.20.

Also raking gold for UC were its Boys and Girls 400m freestyle relay teams. The Boys team was composed of Noel Cañeda, Yana, Mattheus Galo and Michael Vega, while Rosell Cañamo, Mary Arlette Baller, Paula Vega and Cañeda composed the Girls squad.

Powerhouse University of the Visayas continued lording it over gymnastics, securing all its medals from the event yesterday to hold on to second place overall.

UV tallied a two-day total of 11 golds, 12 silvers and 10 bronzes with Mary Mae Paca blazing the floor as she accounted for four golds in Girls Secondary Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics’ (RSG) rope, hoop, ball and all-around exercises.

Also doling out a gold each were Vinnette Marie Pacaña (ribbon); RSG Secondary team of Paca, Pacaña and Jhenniza Mae Feleciano; Naomi Soco in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics’ (WAG) balance beam exercise; and UV’s WAG team of Soco, Wilan Bacalla and Harlene Gay Jaboni.

Another gymnastics powerhouse, University of Southern Philippines (USP), maintained its No.3 position after plucking two golds and two silvers in WAG’s Secondary division, and two silvers and a bronze in the RSG to improve to six golds, five silvers and three bronze medals.

Elementary

In the Elementary division, Sacred Heart School-Jesuit maintained its hold of the leadership as it ended Day 2 with six golds and four silvers, while USP, which failed to enter the top 20 on opening day, surged up as it settled for the No.2 spot with five golds, three silvers and two bronzes.

UV-Main, which also started below the top 10, grabbed the third spot with four golds, four silvers and three bronzes.

Leading SHS-J was Timothy Chu, who topped the Boys 200m in 28.66 seconds and long jump with a leap of 4.19m.

Football

UV-Main plucked its golds from gymnastics courtesy of Ara Khrysstine Bantugan (WAG floor exercise) and Rosan Ceniza (balance beam and all-around).

Goalkeeper Paolo Pascual came up with the big stops yesterday to book Paref-Springdale a semifinal spot after a 4-2 win over UV-Compostela at the SHS-J field.

After a 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation, the match went to a shootout where Pascual came up with two big saves, while RJ Sembrano and Timothy James Mateo converted their spot kicks for Paref’s win. Springdale got its first two goals from Miko Garcia and Carlos Veloso.

They will next face the dangerous Abellana National School, which scored a 9-1 rout over Pope John Seminary, while the other semifinals will pit Don Bosco College against SHS-J.

DBC earlier dumped Cebu City National Science High, 9-2, while SHS-J showed no mercy against Camp Lapu-Lapu National School, 19-2, following their 23-0 blowout against Talisay.

In the Elementary division, rivals DBC and Springdale also arranged a finals meeting after scoring identical 6-0 wins yesterday. DBTC blanked out Cebu City Central School while Paref defeated Bright Academy.

Chess

“I think DBTC will win against Paref. They are bigger and stronger,” said tournament director Francis Ramirez.

In chess, the University of San Jose-Recoletos defeated erstwhile High School division leaders DBTC, 3-1, to grab a share of the lead with the University of San Carlos-North Campus with 13 points each.
