RP bets collar medals in pre-Seag mountainbike tilt

MEMBERS of the RP mountainbike team displayed their readiness for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag) as they secured two of the top three spots in the Men’s downhill event of the 2005 Pre-SEA Games MTB Championships and 2005 Asian Invitational yesterday at the Cebu State College of Science and Technology-CIT Campus in Brgy. Sabang, Danao City.

Dumaguete City’s fearless-racer Joey Barba proved he’s the fastest downhill rider in the country after clocking three minutes and 57.48 seconds to snare the championship of the event, which serves as a tune-up for the Seag event.

Hong Kong’s Kingman Tsui settled for the runner-up spot as he clocked in at 4:09.81, while another RP team member, Michael Borja, secured the bronze with his time of 4:11.15.

Women’s division

Another Filipino rider, Jefferson Odviar, landed fourth with his time of 4:21.06, while Singapore’s Herman Mohd completed the top five riders with his clocking of 4:31.31.

In the Women’s division, RP team’s Athena Beltran was a distant third with her clocking of seven minutes and 23.30 seconds.

Thailand’s Abdul Karee Sattayawan snatched the gold medal after she finished the course in five minutes and 27.27 seconds, while
Taiwan’s Chen Jumi-ao was second in 5:50.44.

Local divisions

In the local competitions, James Sardea bagged the championship in the Open/Elite category after he finished the 1.5-kilometer course in 4:33.58, while Wendell Barba (4:39.60) and Eboy Farr (4:44.42) snared the second and third spots, respectively.

Emerging as king in the Intermediate division was Eddie Donayre, who clocked 4:50.66, while PJ Yu (4:57.86) and Roemo Niez (5:03.65) grabbed the second and third spots, respectively.

Hansel Bacalso was crowned king in the Beginners category, while Paul Yu and Elwin Bacariza landed second and third, respectively.

The top three finishers in the Executive division were Boy Saron, Fulvio Narcisao Jr. and Richard Lato.

The cross-country finals will be held today starting at 9 a.m.
