Sarah Chameleon
In a recent photo exhibit extolling the myriad charms of women, Sarah Lei Spagnolo’s face stood out not because she’s a natural magnet for the camera but because she displayed the ability to look different under different circumstances. Many in the audience didn’t recognize that the face in the picture belonged to the fetching emcee during the informal opening program.
This ability resurfaced during the pictorial for this feature and never ceases to amaze those who witness the transformation. So will the real Sarah Lei please stand up?
Sarah, whose mom is Cebuana and dad is Italian-American, first gained public attention when she became first runner-up in the 2005 Miss Cebu Beauty Pageant. A masscom graduate from St. Theresa’s College-Cebu, Sarah had a blast complying with the internship requirements of her course in print, radio and television. She had a brief stint as a talent with a tv network and landed a job as Public Relations Officer of Plantation Bay.
Are you aware that your face has chameleon-like qualities? That you can switch from looking like a Latina to a Bollywood beauty?
Really? That’s very interesting to know. I have this not-so-secret desire, an idiosyncrasy, of wanting to play different characters in life. I do enjoy expressing myself, and I like being unpredictable.
Did you always have this lithe frame? If not, what regimen do you follow to maintain this figure?
Yes, I was wispy ever since I came out of my mother’s womb. This is the main reason why the biggest achievement in my life right now is my bilbil , a fold of fat. My mom and some friends are panicking. But I’m cool with it. I even like to show it off, hahaha!
I recently bought this belly dancing video and you know what, it does something magical to your disposition. Also, there’s Cory Quirino’s 25-minute workout regimen if one’s a bit too busy for anything rigorous.
Are you a dedicated window-shopper? Impulse buyer?
I only window shop when I am looking for something in particular. I only buy according to my needs and resources, as of the moment.
Which is your most developed sense?
I have this uncanny sense of intuition, of having some sort of premonition. But like most people, I am stubborn and don’t listen to it. I’m still practicing to pay attention to it, especially lately when a remarkable event happened. The future is not separate from the present but a little bit of it comes in every fraction of a second.
How does this translate to your choice of stuff to buy?
For me to buy something, I must feel a certain connection to it. I don’t buy on impulse. So I make a thorough check with the quality, the price and make sure that I really want to get it before I go to the cashier. Buying for me entails a mental exercise.
What’s the flip side to Sarah, the beauty queen and PR officer of this resort?
I don’t view myself as a beauty queen, but rather as a drama queen (he he). It’s a bit of serendipity for me to get this job because my personality is similar to the concept of Plantation Bay: Like this resort, I aspire for a different flavor in life. I think of myself as friendly, accommodating, versatile, and most of all, relaxing to be with.
Did you plan on having this job after college or is it a happy accident?
This was not among the list of my job aspirations, but fate gave me this exciting responsibility. Naturally, I’m giving it my best shot! I’m learning a lot everyday, especially because the people I work with are brilliant mentors with tons of experience.
Would you like to share the agony and the ecstacy of your PR job?
So much to do, so little time! This is really a baptism of fire for me: to be working in a property that is such a pride to Filipinos both here and abroad.
