Songs for Mary
Songs. It was an evening of purely Marian songs that truly delighted the audience at the College Assurance Plan auditorium.
I was with Rev. Frs. Cholo Sungcad and Ponce Jed Bellones and composers Eugene Tan and Jojo Serrano in watching the presentation titled Gasa Kang Mama Maria. The event was actually the 20th Original Marian Song Festival organized by the Cebu Archdiocesan Division of the World Apostolate of Fatima of the Philippines. I thought it was a singing-cum-songwriting competition that the organizers have put up but we were told that it was going to be a mere presentation of Marian compositions. Mila Ponce and fellow broadcaster Algene Abaquita ably emceed the event.

HEARTWARMING. The Santa Maria band opened the presentation with five songs, after which the 13original Marian compositions were sung by their respective interpreters. It is heartwarming to notethat the composers, musical arrangers and singers exerted a lot of effort to present an excellent showdespite the fact that it was not a competition. Even the organizers should be lauded for producing compact disc albums of the 13 Marian songs.

COMMENDABLE. It is really commendable on the part of those involved in the presentation to pool their resources, energy, talent and time together just to put up a musically-enriching evening. To me, the Original Marian Soing Festival should be institutionalized as a yearly event.

REVIVAL. It was also during the presentation that Fr. Bellones intimated to me that he is thinking ofspearheading the revival of the Cebu metropolitan Gospel Songwriting Competition which enjoyedtremendous popularity from 1989-1993.
That particular event saw Elmer Cabahug, Sheryn Regis, Rochelle “Raki” Vega and other singing greats as interpreters, before they joined other major singing contests like the Cebu Popular Music Festival. I told Fr. Bellones to pursue his dream. The Gospel Songwriting Competition should be revived by all means.

CONCERT. On Friday, Sept. 16, Gary Valenciano shall give his message of hope by touching other people and changing their lives through his music and testimony. His concert, titled Gary V, Soul Full is a presentation of Citichurch which sees itself as a spirited church, one that celebrates life and whose mission is to actively raise the standard in every aspect of work and living.
What is so commendable is the fact that Citichurch has chosen the Responsive Education for Autistic Children as the beneficiary of the concert; this is truly laudable. So on Friday, at 9 p.m., let us watch Gary’s show at the grand ballroom of Waterfront Hotel in Lahug. We will not only be entertained - but we shall also be helping a very noble cause for autistic kids. They need our help.

VICTIM. A lady town mayor here is the latest victim of the nefarious activity of this bunch of pseudo-mediamen. They purposely went to her town and solicited an amount for their purported project. She gave them P1,500. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or text 0915-4992844).
