Argao kid outwits execs in chess

Despite losing his last match, 12-year-old prodigy Yves Fiel showcased his impending greatness by besting a field of veterans in topping the September edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) Monthly Handicapping Tournament last Sunday.

Fiel, the Visayas kiddie champion of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship, strung together four straight wins and held the solo lead a full point ahead of the field entering the final round.

A final-round loss to JR Quidlat dropped Fiel to a four-way tie for the championship with Quidlat, Ramon Pangilinan and Joe Atillo toting four points apiece. Fiel’s 16 tiebreak points gave the Argao grade schooler the championship, just half a point ahead of Pangilinan, who wound up second.

Atillo and Quidlat rounded out the top four.

However, since Fiel, who will vie for the Shell Active Chess national championship next month in Manila, was just a guest player in the tournament, it was Pangilinan who advanced to the grand finals in December, where he will be joined by the other monthly champions.

Pangilinan beat another guest player, 17-year-old Therese Gonzales in the final round, while Atillo outplayed Jason Genobiagon.

Fifth

Fiel’s father, Percival, secured fifth spot with 3.5 points after beating Felix Balbona in the final round.

Others who have clinched spots for the year-end tournament are January ruler Dante Arguelles, Jerry Rallos (Febrauary), Renato Casia (March), Richard Abangan (April), Fred Sandalo (May), Zaldy Tabanao (June), Jongjong Mendez (July) and Jun Olis ( August). (GCM)
