Fancied woodpushers to compete in Sept. 24-25 Argao Chess Open
In what should be a big boost to Argao’s local chess program, the Argao Chess Club (ACC) is set to hold an open chess tournament on Sept. 24- 25 at the Argao Municipal Building.
Dubbed the Argao Open Active Chess Tournament, the two-day event is one of the many sporting spectacles lined up to spice up the week of festivities leading to the celebration of the municipality’s town fiesta on Sept. 29.
The tournament is open to all chess players regardless of age or rating and will employ the seven-round Swiss system format.
The first three rounds of the tournament gets underway starting at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 after a short opening program, while the fourth to seventh rounds will start at the same time the following day.
Among the fancied players expected to compete are Richard Natividad, Voltaire Sevillano, Anthony Makinano, Kim Steven Yap and Antonio Cabibil.
Prizes
A top cash prize of P4,000 awaits the champion, while the runner-up and third-place finishers pocket P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.
On top of the cash incentives, special awards will also be handed out to the stellar performers of the competition. Up for grabs are the best woman, best elementary and best high-school players.

One of the top players to come out of Argao is 12-year-old Yves Fiel, the reigning Visayas champion of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship. Fiel, who also ruled Sunday’s Cepca September tournament will lead the the Visayas contingent to the Shell national finals next month. (GCM)
