Palaro October changes to be final

Amendments in the Palarong Pambansa will be finalized next month in Baguio City when the top officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) will conduct accreditation for the officials of next year’s competition in Nueva Ecija.

Vivian Giñete, head of the Central Visayas Regional Task Force for School Sports, said they formulated the adjustments in a forum at the Ecotech Center in Lahug.

The forum, conducted by Regional Task Force for School Sports coordinator Feleciano Toledo, tackled the rules on athletes’ accreditation as well as some changes in the competition’s guidelines.

Also discussed in the forum – attended by 46 DepEd division chiefs, tournament managers and tournament officials – was a ruling ordering the different regional DepEd bosses to consider if they want to change their logos, colors and monikers come the Nueva Ecija edition.

Giñete added that they also touched on the rules regarding the duties of the host region and changed some of the Palaro’s organizational structure.

The changes may be officially approved in the Baguio meeting on Oct. 24-28.

New logos, colors and monikers

“There is an order from the national office to the different regions to create their respective teams, who may create their new logos, colors and monikers if they want to,” said Giñete.

As for the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, Giñete said they are considering changing the official color of the delegation to canary yellow and royal blue from its previous dark orange and blue combination.

Regarding the new Palaro rulings, the changes will be announced after these are finalized next month, including the reverting to the medal system.

To recall, the points system was employed in the Iloilo edition last May instead of the usual medal system, drawing both compliments and criticisms.

The points system was last used in 1997 when the Palaro management was transferred from the then Department of Education Culture and Sports to the Philippine Sports Commission. Athletes’ parents from perennial titlist National Capital Region criticized the news system.

In a previous interview, a parent of an NCR athlete during the Iloilo edition, requesting anonymity, said the points system was used to dislodge NCR from the throne.

Although, many didn’t agree with the idea, including Giñete and DepEd-7 Assistant Regional Supervisor Victor Yntig, who said the points system was reinstalled not to overthrow NCR but to encourage the participation in ballgames and level the playing field. (JSV )
