Dismissal awaits workers squatting on MCIAA lots
By Elias O. Baquero

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) will fire airport personnel found squatting on airport lots once the court declares the occupation of the properties as illegal.

MCIAA General Manager Adelberto F. Yap said several airport personnel were charged in court for illegal squatting on airport lots. The cases are still pending.

Most of those charged are considered professional squatters because aside from constructing houses on the property, they pretended to be owners of the lots, built other structures and rented it out to other people.

Strict

“The MCIAA authorities are very strict against squatting because it is prejudicial to the interest of the government,” Yap said.

Yap said that while the Mactan Electric Company and Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) strictly require proof of ownership of lots, or written consent of lot owner before granting lines to business firms, they are lenient to squatters.

Waiver

However, Terry Andaya, MCWD corporate communications manager, said squatters are made to sign waivers that their water connections will be cut off once a lot owner complains, or will use the property the squatters occupy.

Andaya said MCIAA authorities can inform MCWD about the squatters in a letter so they can appropriately act on it.

Lot owners can identify the squatters so their water lines will be disconnected. But first, MCWD will have to inform the squatters that their water connection will be cut off.
