Ginebra still to decide on new import

The Barangay Ginebra Kings finally found a reinforcement for the coming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Conference, which opens Oct. 2, after failing to lure ex-Utah Jazz veteran Cedric Henderson into their fold.

The Kings instead chose 33-year-old Liberia-born Mustapha Hoff, who arrived Thursday and immediately plunged into action against Alaska in a practice game later in the day at the Sports Kamp in Taguig.

Hoff’s stay with the Kings, though, isn’t final. Ginebra team manager Allan Caidic said the Oregon State U alum’s performance will be evaluated by Kings coach Siot Tanquincen.

Brent’s teammate

“Henderson would’ve been great, but we can’t do anything,” said Caidic.

In Oregon State U, Hoff played alongside current San Antonio Spur Brent Barry before bringing his trade to different parts of the world after failing to make the cut in the NBA.

Hoff’s credentials say he has played in Europe, China and Korea, where he teamed up with current Alaska import Tee McClary with the Samsung Thunders.

Listed at 6-foot-6, Hoff has also seen action in the USBL, playing alongside and against the likes of former PBA imports Terquin Mott, Cory Hightower and Ronnie Fields.

SLR import

Meanwhile, Sta. Lucia Realty import Lenny Cooke was scheduled to arrive yesterday after getting the nod from his doctor in the US.

Realtors head coach Alfrancis Chua announced that Cooke, a former Purefoods import who injured his Achilles tendon and his shin in a vehicular accident, has already sent him “a clean bill of health from a US physician.”

Other imports are Talk ’N Text’s Damien Cantrell, Alaska’s Artemus McClary and former Los Angeles Clipper Rico Hill of San Miguel Beer. (JSV)
