Sanctions for Sept. 11 brawl out Monday; new testimonies heard By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
After conducting a closed-door investigation on the Sept. 21 brawl, involving the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) said it will come up with a decision on Monday.
“We’ve covered a lot of ground today in our investigation,” said Cesafi commissioner Danny Duran, who presided over the investigation yesterday along with lawyer Joseph Baduel and judge Reynoso Belarmino. “But at the same time, we still have to study the new testimonies that we have gathered.”
Present during the session were UC guard Allain Abellanosa and USC guard Ahman James Tagalog – the two players who were tagged to have sparked the free-for-all at the USC Gym.
UC coach Rhoel Gomez and USC coach Mike Reyes were also present to give their accounts of the incident, along with the referees, statisticians and table officials of the match.
Delicate
“Since it is a delicate situation, we feel that making a hasty decision on the matter would be unwise,” Duran said. “I think it’s in the best interest of everyone involved that we study the facts meticulously before issuing a sanction.”
Duran said his committee will study the data obtained carefully and then agree on the appropriate penalty, which they will recommend to the Cesafi board on Monday.
“After that, the decision will be up to the board,” said Duran.
Pepito appeals
On a related note, Duran said that the board will also subject the case of University of the Visayas Baby Lancers coach Delfin Pepito to further examination after the latter recently filed an appeal to the Cesafi board.
Pepito was earlier suspended for the entire 2005 season after he attempted to punch referee Jimmy Ybañez in a Cesafi high-school match last Sept. 8 in Minglanilla. |
