Lawmaker files bill to create Naga City

The congressman responsible for converting Talisay from a town into a city now wants to do the same for Naga town.

“The province of Cebu will soon have its seventh city,” said Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district), who filed House Bill 3704.

Naga, about 22 kilometers south of Cebu City, meets two out of three requirements to create a city. It has a population of 84,526; a total land area of 10,201 hectares or 102 square kilometers; and generated P83.6 million in revenues in 2004.

The Local Government Code requires a population of 150,000, a land area of 100 square kilometers and an annual income of P20 million.

“Naga has matured fully over the years. It has met the qualifying factors and minimum standards for a full-grown city,” said Gullas, a former provincial governor.

The official website of the House of Representatives states the Naga bill is now with the committee on local government.

In a press statement, Gullas also said Naga now hosts a thriving manufacturing industry, apart from prawn farms, fishing and a tourism industry that capitalizes on popular beach resorts.

Cebu Province already has six cities: Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Danao, Toledo and Talisay, of which Gullas was the first city mayor. (From PR)
