Cebuano tops CDO triathlon
Cagayan de Oro City – Hard work and perseverance paid off dearly as Cebu City’s Gerrie Calinawan rallied from behind to defeat his playing-coach Abet Alon-Alon for the crown in the sixth leg of the Speedo National Age-Group Triathlon (NAGT) series held here yesterday.
The 21-year-old triathlete, who is already the champion of the series, lagged behind early placing only sixth in the 750-meter swim but gained steam in 20km bike and the 5km run legs to finish with a time of one hour, eight minutes and 57 seconds, to win the event’s crown and the Male 20-24 age group.
It was Calinawan’s fifth victory of the series.
Grizzled racer
Alon-Alon, for his part, showed that age is not slowing him down as he timed 1:09:45 to finish second overall, while topping the 40-44 category.
The bronze went to the nation’s reigning junior champion, Joash Serrano (Male 15-below champion), who finished in 1:11:04.
On the distaff side in the event sponsored by Speedo, City Government of Cagayan de Oro, Cagayan de Oro Triathlon Association (CDO-Tri), PowerBar, Reliv Philippines, Diners Club, Stronghold Insurance and Asian Centre For Insulation Philippines (ACIP), 14-year-old Kim Mangrobang showed that youth has its advantages as she outperformed her older counterparts with a time of 1:16:00.
Mangrobang won the 100 points for the series and became the lone female 15-below winner. Second was Anelia Primne (Female 20-29 champion) in 1:22:35 and Daisy Aguado (2nd place Female 20-29) was third in 1:25:06.
Rematch
In a rematch between two of the nation’s leading junior triathletes, Talisay City’s Dec Rowan Fernandez fumbled in his attempt to beat champion Serrano as he could only finish second (Male 15-below) with a time of 1:12:02.
Cebu’s Neil Reyes topped his age-group (Male 35-39) in 1:13:37, while Mandaue City’s Trino Rey Trasmonte finished second in the Male 30-34 with a time of 1:15:09.
Cebu’s top triathlete Eldy Banluta joined the event as a guest participant and was excluded from points and prizes.
The Cebuano contingent was supported by APL Trading, OZ Racing, T.W.O., RJA Pawnshoppe, Anything Timber, Homeworks, American Feeds, Ibarra Design Ltd. Inc, and H2Zero Distilled Drinking Water.
